Cars, whether old or new, cheap or expensive, all carry the risk of accident. Therefore, buying "insurance" is essential. But there are many types of insurance, offering different coverages, making them difficult to understand. Let's look at the details of various types of car insuurance and which type suits which car and driver characteristics?
Compulsory Motor Insurance (Por Ror Bor). All cars must have it. Every car eligible to run in Thailand must first have compulsory motor insurance, or what is known as "Por Ror Bor." as it is mandated by the Motor Vehicle Accident Victims Protection Act B.E. 2535 (1992). Those who fail to do so are committing an offense and will be fined not exceeding 10,000 baht.
This type of insurance is only responsible for loss of life, body, or health of victims from car accidents. Other damages, such as to the car itself or buildings, will not be covered. And the premium is fixed at approximately just over 600 baht.
Type 1
Provides the most comprehensive coverage, covering life, body, and health of the insured and third parties. Covers damage to the property of the insured and third parties. It also covers third-party property, such as buildings, houses, and shops damaged by car accidents. Including coverage for vehicle loss and fire.
It is well-known that Type 1 insurance has the highest premium, starting from 15,000 baht and above. The coverage is also full. Therefore, new cars financed through a loan are mandatorily required to have Type 1 insurance in the first year. But if the car is still new, even if it's not financed, it's advisable to have Type 1 insurance for convenient services, especially for women or those who travel alone regularly.
Type 2
Provides coverage for life, body, and health of the insured and third parties. Covers damage to third-party property, such as buildings, houses, and shops damaged by car accidents. Including coverage for vehicle loss and fire.
Not many people get this type, even though the price is only around five thousand baht. Because it only covers damage to life, body, third-party property, and vehicle loss by fire. We recommend this for those who are not interested in Type 1 insurance and drive carefully, not frequently getting into minor accidents, but are afraid of their car being stolen because they use it for business, then choose this one.
Type 3
Provides coverage for life, body, and health of the insured and third parties. Only covers damage to the property of third parties.
In the event of an accident, this Type 3 insurance will not cover the insured vehicle. If a collision occurs, the insurance company will only cover the vehicle and property of the third party. As for bail for the driver in a criminal case arising from an accident, it may or may not be included, depending on each provider's sales promotion. It is recommended to choose a provider that includes this right, even if the premium is higher, it will definitely be worth it if something happens.
This type of insurance is for those who like to save money, suitable for people who drive infrequently and carefully, not frequently hitting others. Or those who want Type 1 insurance but insurance companies don't accept because the car is over 5-7 years old.
Type 4
Only covers damage to the property of third parties.
This insurance is for covering third-party property, suitable for car owners who use their car infrequently, similar to buying a car for storage or for driving to buy groceries, dropping kids off at school.
The premium is only just over 1,000 baht, covering only damage to third-party property. Therefore, it is suitable for those who use their car very little or use routes with low traffic, such as in rural areas, and routes that the driver is particularly familiar with. As for damage to life and body, let the compulsory third-party insurance take responsibility.
Type 5
Provides coverage for life, body, and health of the insured and third parties. Covers damage to the property of the insured and third parties. It also covers third-party property, such as buildings, houses, and shops damaged by car accidents. Including coverage for vehicle loss and fire, but the damage must result only from a collision with another land vehicle.
The premium is around 8,000-10,000 baht, reasonably more economical than Type 1 insurance. For careful drivers, because it covers property damage only in cases of collision with another land vehicle. If you hit a wall or an electric pole, claims are not accepted. But if you are more afraid of vehicle loss or fire, you can buy this one right away...
